Welcome and thank you for visiting my online gallery.
There hasn’t been a time when I wasn’t intrigued by the beauty of shadows and lights that shimmer and dance in the world around us. It’s at dusk and dawn when I think that the play of light is at its best and this is the time that I love the most. It is in those few minutes where day become night or night turns to day that the changing light and shadows elicits emotions, which for me, are magical. Perhaps intrigue is to “soft” of a word to describe the feelings that are felt, and it may be more appropriate to say that I am captivated, even compelled, to try to capture in an art form those changing interactions of color, lights and shadows which seem to define the beauty of the world around us.
It’s the journey of trying to capture on canvas the emotions I felt during that mystical snippet of time is where I find my joy, my contentment. For there is gratitude in having the opportunity to share the beauty of that day with others and gratefulness in being able to express the wonder that I felt. And if I’ve done my job well, then my hope is that you may also experience a bit of that grace with me.
BIOGRAPHY:
I can only call myself an artist because of the grace of others. I have no formal training, only a great love of color, shape, and composition. While I learned about photography at a very young age and was proudly hanging my sketches around the house by six – it took "finding myself" while earning a PhD in Immunology (University of California Davis) to truly understand how integrated I am with the arts It was during those long years of study, surrounded scientific papers, submerged in data and swimming in the starkness of this discipline, that I came to realized that I wasn’t complete unless I was actively expressing myself in some form of color and shape. An insight? A lightning bolt? Anepiphany? Who knows, but the realization that expressing myself through drawings, or photographs was what made my soul sing was pivotal in starting my transformation.
It’s often said that when the student is ready, the teacher(s) will come, and whether it was fate, serendipity, or just plain luck, it was at the time of my artistic self-awareness and need (2012) that I had an opportunity to study under seascape artist, Joe Gulick. And so my journey into the land of oil painting began.
I have been blessed to have such a kind, gracious and skilled mentor as Joe. And at the ripe age of 89, he is still painting and I’m still learning. However, there have been others who have been so pivotal in my artistic development. The art community is a generous one and my teachers have been many. From new techniques to business and presentation lessons, I have received valuable guidance. However, more importantly, I have found friends and a sense of community, both which I treasure dearly and which I am internally grateful for.
So while I have no formal “art” credentials, my school have been rich in the grace of others. From my perspective, this real world schoolroom has enriched my work in a way that is only possible through the sharing of a life’s calling which is driven by passion and flamed by great love.
